Crocidura cossyrensis Contoli, 1989 (Mammalia, Soricidae): karyotype, biochemical genetics and hybridization experiments

2004

The shrew Crocidura cossyrensis Contoli, 1989 from Pantelleria (I), a Mediterranean island 100 km south of Sicily and 70 km west from Tunisia, was investigated in order to understand its origin and its relationship with C. russula from Tunisia, Morocco and Switzerland. With the exception of a single heterozygote centric fusion, C. cossyrensis had a karyotype identical with that of C. russula from Tunisia (2N = 42, NF = 70 to 72), but it differed from C. russula from Morocco and Switzerland (2N = 42, NF = 60). The former have 5-6 pairs of chromosomes with small arms that are acrocentric in the latter. Genetic comparisons with allozyme data revealed small genetic distance (0.04) between C. co…

RNase H1 and H2 are differentially regulated to eliminate RNA-DNA hybrids

2019

SUMMARYRNA-DNA hybrids are tightly regulated to ensure genome integrity. The RNase H enzymes, RNase H1 and H2, contribute to chromosomal stability through the removal of RNA-DNA hybrids. Loss of RNase H2 function is implicated in human diseases of the nervous system and cancer. To better understand RNA-DNA hybrid dynamics, we have focused on elucidating the regulation of the RNase H enzymes themselves. Using yeast as a model system, we demonstrate that RNase H1 and H2 are controlled in different manners. RNase H2 is regulated in a strict cell cycle dependent manner, both in terms of its R-loop removal, and ribonucleotide excision repair functions. RNase H1, however, can function independent…

Al cuore del fantastico. Ibridi da pensare nel Paleolitico

2022

Our narrative abilities go back before Chauvet. Already the ivory figure of the so-called Hohlenstein-Stadel Lion-Man, dated to about 40,000 years ago, must be regarded as the most advanced product of a hundred if not a thousand years of figurative and narrative experimentation. In order to create this hybrid figure, as well the more or less theriomorphic figures which populate caves all over the world, the human mind must have possessed developed narrative skills. All the imaginary animals found in prehistoric art and all the teratologies found in caves, presuppose a narrative, more precisely the story of a metamorphosis. In this contribution I propose an interpretation that investigates t…

Aroma production and fermentation performance of S. cerevisiae × S. kudriavzevii natural hybrids under cold oenological conditions

2019

This work aims to describe the wine fermentation characteristics of 23 natural S. cerevisiae × S. kudriavzevii hybrid yeasts related to fermentative environments isolated from different regions and their significance for the aroma spectra of the produced wines. Fermentations were performed at 12 °C in artificial must, and S. cerevisiae and S. kudriavzevii pure species strains were used for comparison purposes. We determined the relevant kinetic parameters of fermentation, the concentration of the main metabolites and the main aroma-related compounds produced after fermentation. The results revealed that some strains that show well-rounded characteristics could be profitable yeast starters f…

Vortex motion in Nb/PdNi/Nb trilayers: new aspects in the flux flow state

2011

We study the dynamics of vortex lines in Supercondutor/Ferromagnet/Superconductor (SFS) heterostructures at microwave frequencies. We have employed swept-frequency, Corbino-disk and resonant, dielectric-resonator techniques to obtain the field and temperature dependence of the vortex-state parameters. We concentrate here on the genuine flux-flow resistivity $\rho_{ff}$, that we access at subcritical currents using a sufficiently high driving frequency. We find that $\rho_{ff}$ does not follow the well-known Bardeen-Stephen model. Instead, it is well described by a full time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau expression at very thin F layer thickness, but changes to a previously unreported field-depe…

Spontaneous hybridizations between oilseed rape and wild radish

1998

The occurence of spontaneous hybridization between Brassica napus (oilseed rape) and Raphanus raphanistrum (wild radish) was investigated under different density conditions in cages and open-field experiments. Hybrids with wild radish as the seed parent were identified by screening for herbicide resistance belonging to rape. Small seed size and intermediate morphology were used to screen for hybrids with rape as the seed parent. Leaf isozyme patterns and flow cytometry provided confirmation of hybrids. Wild radish in an oilseed rape field produced as many as three interspecific hybrids per 100 plants. This is the first report of such a spontaneous event. The frequency of hybrids is expected…

Treatment of Multidrug-Resistant Leukemia Cells by Novel Artemisinin-, Egonol-, and Thymoquinone-Derived Hybrid Compounds

2018

Two major obstacles for successful cancer treatment are the toxicity of cytostatics and the development of drug resistance in cancer cells during chemotherapy. Acquired or intrinsic drug resistance is responsible for almost 90% of treatment failure. For this reason, there is an urgent need for new anticancer drugs with improved efficacy against cancer cells, and with less toxicity on normal cells. There are impressive examples demonstrating the success of natural plant compounds to fight cancer, such as Vinca alkaloids, taxanes, and anthracyclines. Artesunic acid (ARTA), a drug for malaria treatment, also exerts cytotoxic activity towards cancer cells. Multidrug resistance often results fro…
